How to keep a useful reading journal

Record what you thought at the time

A long reading is easy to screenshot and forget. What often matters later is the question you actually had, the sentence you noticed and the action you eventually took.

A journal need not become a collection of apparent predictions that came true. Its value can be in showing how your understanding changed, including when a reading did not fit.

Six fields are enough

You do not need an essay for every session. A few lines separating events from interpretation give your future self a clearer starting point.

• Date and a concrete question.
• Original result: cards and orientations, or six line values and changing positions.
• The calculation or draw convention.
• Your initial reaction and the real experience it brought to mind.
• One small action you can take.
• A later review: what happened and what did not match.

Keep counterexamples and the original wording

Once an outcome is known, an ambiguous sentence can seem to have predicted it all along. Recording your initial interpretation helps you notice that hindsight. Keep the details that did not fit, too.

When the question involves another person, record your feelings and the facts you know. Do not turn a symbolic reading into a claim about someone else’s private thoughts.

How the Wenbu journal works

A short example entry

Question: should I enroll in a weekend course? Initial interpretation: try a small version first. Action: take a trial lesson on Saturday and note the time involved. Review: the subject appealed to me, but the commute was longer than expected, so I chose online practice for now.

This example records how a decision took shape, including both the initial prompt and the practical information that mattered. You can use the structure in a note today; a useful review does not require a large collection of readings.
